Rome was founded on April 21, 753 BC. There is a legend in the way that Rome was founded:the twins romulus and remus were left to be killed by wild animals, they were found and taken care of. When they grew-up they decided to build a city, but they didnt agree on everything and during a fight romulus killed remus and became king with the city named after him.

The Beginning of Rome

The first rulers of rome were kings(monarchy). They were in charge of everything, and were chosen by a group of elders(senes). The kings ruled for about 200 years, until they drove out the last king and formed the republic.

The republic was made up of many parts. There were two leaders called consuls, then the tribunes protected plebian rights, the aediles managed everyday things, the praetors made sure people followed the law and were in charge of justice, the senators took care of the matters of the city, the quaestors helped the consuls and were in charge of finances, the censors were elected every 5 years for a 18 month period and took a census and could add people to the senate and take people off of it.Dictators were appointed for 6 months in times of emergencies, and then there were the assemblies who voted on everything. The republic lasted for about 450 years until Julius Caesar's death in 27BC.
Sometimes during the republic the rich and powerful would influence the assemblies and the voters to vote a certain way to keep themselves in power. This was considered an oligarchy.
